Getting Started with Rock Painting

  • Rocks: Smooth, flat rocks work best for painting. You can find these at parks, beaches, or craft stores. I love this one from National Geographic. It includes the rocks, paint, stickers and even googly eyes!
  • Paints: Acrylic paints are ideal as they adhere well to rocks and offer vibrant colors. Make sure to have a variety of colors to choose from. We started off with this set which also includes some brushes but you can grab acrylic paints at your favorite craft store.
  • Brushes: Small, fine-tipped brushes are perfect for details, while larger brushes can cover bigger areas quickly. I bought an extra set of cheap brushes because I knew they would just get ruined eventually.
  • Sealer: A clear acrylic sealer will protect the painted rocks from the elements, especially if they will be placed outdoors. We have never sealed our rocks but if you would like the paint to last long-term then a sealer would be wise.
  • Palettes and Water Cups: To mix and clean paints. We prefer pallets but paper plates work well also.
